Gumpaste Roses

Before making roses, you will need to have your gumpaste ready.  I have found that a gumpaste that can be rolled very thin is ideal to have life-like roses.

First cut wire the length that you will need for your roses.  Make a small hook on the end.  If your make your own rose cones out of gumpaste, moisten the hook with a bit of water and put a small cone of gumpaste onto the wire.  These will need to dry until hardened.  I purchase styrofoam rose cones so that I can start making roses immediately.  If using styrofoam rose cones, I make a small hook on the end and using a hot glue gun, push the wire into the rose cone.

Next roll a small amount of gumpaste out very thinly.  You should be able to see through the gumpaste.  I have flowers painted on my table that I can see through the gumpaste when I have it rolled out thin enough.  Then a 5-petal cutter is used.  It is very quick and easy.

Laying the gumpaste on a piece of foam, I soften the edges of the petals with a ball tool.  Then make a small cup in each petal.

The cone is then brushed with water and the petals are lightly moistened 1/3 of the way up.  Starting with the 1st petal, bring it up over the cone and position it so that it covers the cone as the inside petal of a rose would look.  Skip a petal and bring the next petal up and overlap the first petal.  Continue with the next 3 petals until they are all covering the rose and you have formed a small bud.  I hang this upside down to dry.

How to Make Gumpaste Bows

This bow is quite easy to make.  Start by rolling out gumpaste very thin.  Using a ribbon cutter, cut widths of ribbon the size you desire.  Using the size of the cake you want to place it on as a guide, cut them the length needed.  If you have a 6" cake, cut the strips in 6" lengths, which will be folded in half.

I place the strips over a 1" dowel rod until they are stiff, usually overnight.  I cut about 10 strips of each size (ex.  10 of  6", 10 of 5 1/2" and 10 of 5".)  When I put them over the dowel rod, I use a small brush to put water on the one end, drape the gumpaste over and squeeze the ends into a point.

When it is time to assemble the bow, I get my large Tupperware bowl which has a large flat bottom in it.  I place a square of wax paper into the bottom.  I place the largest ribbons on the bottom.  Sometimes I add a few roses if that is what the cake is decorated with.  I face every other ribbon on end.  I put white chocolate chips into a decorating cone and melt for 30 seconds in the microwave.  Squeeze the cone and put back into the microwave for another 30 seconds.  I keep doing this until all is melted.  This is what I use to hold the bow together.  I let the first layer cool and the chocolate harden and then add the next smaller row of ribbons.  Let this cool and harden before adding the next until you have the bow as you like it.
